Dusharin: "We came to Islamabad on the
14th of July. It was really hot
there. There was an air conditioner in the hotel and it made life a little bit easier. But
it was a scorching heat in the city. By the middle of the day life in the city comes to a
standstill. Our team was formed from people of the K2 expedition in 1996. The idea of
Nanga Parbat ascent itself came to us in that expedition. Dusharin, Dosaev, Mariev, Luba
Shvedova, the permanent doctor of our expedition, and Vyatcheslav Volkov (he was in our
Everest expedition in 1992) arrived in Islamabad first. Andrei Volkov and Victor
Kolesnichenko would arrive later. We were waiting for Carlos Buhler from the US. He
arrived by air on the 18th. |

We familiarized ourselves with Islamabad. The city is divided into squares. It's very
simple to orient yourself - you just have to know the number of the square to get there.
There are wide avenues between the squares, green plantations and shops along the edges.
In the middle there is a place for living and all the other things. The length of 14
squares is approximately 28km, so each square is 2x2km. The structure is very simple and
clear. |
Islamabad is a civilized city, but you can see only a few women on the streets. Women are
always accompanied by men. It is obligatory. A woman walks just a step behind a man. And
it seems as if she is glued to him. She pays attention to nothing but her husband. He is
an ideal creature, he is like God, and he is everything for her. These are not just words.
You can notice and understand that. We were aware of women's fate in 19th century Russia,
but for the first time saw the Islam version."
