It happened so that there was one man in the expedition to Nanga Parbat who was not
well-prepared for such a severe mountain, even though he was an experienced climber. He
was not experienced enough to go that time. It was rather unexpected for the other
climbers. They turned out to be unprepared for that situation. So what happened then?
That man's name is Vyatcheslav (Slava) Volkov. He is Andrei's elder brother. Long-time
relationships and some previous joined projects make him connected with mountain-climbers
from Togliatti. He was one of the organizers and the leader of the Russian Everest
expedition in 1996. |

Slava was born in Arkhangelsk. This is where he furrowed the severe North Sea in full
sail. Being an experienced person, he perceived the mystery of the sea depth. He learned
how to realize his will-power and to reach his goals in the stern world of sea waves, wind
and stream. He was very successful in that. He is still proud of his 'higher category
referee in sailing' title. Not long ago Slava Volkov achieved a rare title of 'master of
sports in long voyages on yacht cruisers'. He got it in his own project "From
Togliatti to Togliatti around Europe."
Then there were expanses and out-of-the-way corners of Russia that he explored as an
experienced tourist. The nature, the guitar and the fire were his setting. He discovered
the laws of nature and people's laws at the same time. It was a period when his
personality had been formed, and when he collected his living experience. His young life
was just bursting with energy, and there was enough positive energy for mischief,
creativity, serious studies, self-improvement, for adventures and ambitious projects, and
for the fight to get his place in this world. |
The technical world with all its rules and laws was not a mystery for him. Slava was
brought to Togliatti by the first wave, with those that created the city and founded the
automobile plant. He was one of those people who began the project and put to the test the
patterns of new cars, and succeeded in this field. Being a high-speed driver, a car
designer, an honored person, and a candidate of technical sciences, he took over one of
the highest positions at the automobile plant. However, this didn't satisfy him.
He became more attentive to world of people's thinking, trying to find an answer and a
pattern of forming a personality. As a result, he became a member of the group of
volunteers creating the program of the new educational system in Russia. So he turned his
energy and experience towards this new direction. He was one of the organizers of the
AutoVAZbank project that founded the International Academy of Business and Banking in
Togliatti. It is a rather strong establishment nowadays and a source of modern
technologies in the Russian provinces.
But this is only one period in his biography. Now he is interested in problems of
governing large administrative territories. That's what he is doing in his tenure of
vice-mayor of Togliatti. It's more likely that it's not the end. There might be some new
projects and adventures where we'll see his real nature and his personal traits.
A born leader, an adventurous organizer, a lover of life and women, an extrasensor and a
physician. A stout man, jester, ringleader and inventor. An expert on peoples' weak points
and sophisticated public figure. A bibliophile and a spontaneous speaker. A man of the
idea, a stubborn person, a fighter and a winner. A lover of parties and the guitar. A man
from Arkhangelsk.
