History of AvtoVAZ Alpine Club
The mountaineering team assembled at VAZ completed some very serious ascents and took part in All-Russia Championships. The leader and organizer of the team was Vladimir S.Benkin; a native of Togliatti, a doctor and a master of sports. Nearly all major climbing expeditions in which first-class VAZ climbers took part were organized by Vladimir Benkin. Soon after a group of amateurs began to form around these highly-qualified climbers. Autumn 1992 was a significant point in the history of the club. At this time the first official meeting took place and the AvtoVAZ Mountaineering Section was organized. Evgeny M.Lebovich (electrician at VAZ, 1st sporting class) was elected the first chairman of the Section. The Section's trainer was Yury V.Kazaev, shop superintendant at VAZ, master of sports. Since then the Section has developed rapidly. Without mentioning everyone,
we would like to point out those members which have made the most significant
contributions to the Section's development:
Section members invariably took part in the USSR Mountaineering Championships and the Central Council of "Labour" Society Championships. Many of them received their master of sports status while being the members of AvtoVAZ Mountaineering Section:
Each year interesting and impressing ascents via different routes in the USSR mountain ranges were accomplished. Since 1991 Section members have started climbing foreign mountains. From 1972 to 1982, a series of big walls of the highest grade have been completed: 1972 - Engels peak (6,501m) - via South Wall (Vladimir Benkin)
